Senior Relay Technician
Job description
General Overview:
At a senior level, performs installation, commissioning, and maintenance of my clients Transmission Services
substation protective relaying, diagnostics, measurement, monitoring and control systems. Senior
technicians assist in technical support to system operations, my client design and maintenance engineering
groups and customers in the development and implementation of protection systems. This position utilizes
in-depth knowledge of best practices and experience in own discipline to provide and improve services.
Takes a new perspective to solve complex problems. Works independently and receives minimal guidance.
Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May direct the work of other staff members.
? Coordinates and manages complex projects involving my client System Operations, Generation, my clients
System Protection Engineering, my clients Telecommunications, my clietnts Network Services and ERCOT.
? Performs the duties required to install, operate, and maintain protective and auxiliary relays and related
equipment in generating station switchyards, switching stations, substations, and customers’
installations.
? Inspects, cleans, tests, and makes adjustments to relays; removes or replaces all types of relays and
associated equipment; makes repairs and modifications involving the replacement, addition, or
substitution of parts.
? Performs complex maintenance, installation, commissioning, and integration tasks on equipment,
including but not limited to Protective Relays, Windows based computers, Human Machine Interfaces,
Digital Fault Recorders, and other related equipment and peripherals.
? Uses vendor software to configure and implement customer-specific and equipment-specific
requirements and programs.
? Assist engineering and purchasing with the testing/evaluation of new equipment and technologies for
potential long-term agreements.
? Performs modifications of system documentation and drawings including, but not limited to,
departmental procedures, schematics, diagrams and spreadsheets.
? Analyzes, evaluates, and corrects anomalies in control related systems.
? Develops and summarizes test results, trouble reports and required records for protection related
equipment. Completes and submits NERC and ERCOT required documentation.
? Operates handheld manual tools and power tools in performing installation and maintenance tasks.
? Follows my clients Safety and Operating Procedures.
? Performs work by traveling independently or with a small crew to various locations (substations, power
plants, water systems, etc.) as scheduled.
Minimum Qualifications:
Five or more years of experience in the construction and/or maintenance of power substation protection,
diagnostic, monitoring and/or control systems or other relevant experience. A degree(s) in electrical power
theory, electronics, instrumentation, controls, computer science or relevant field may be substituted per
LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.
Driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
? Knowledge of substation equipment.
? Knowledge of electrical control and protective relaying schemes.
? Knowledge of Remote Terminal Units, and Protective Relays.
? Knowledge of network/LAN operations.
? Knowledge of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electricity fundamentals.
? Knowledge of communications protocols (ex: Harris, Modbus, SEL and DNP 3.0).
? Knowledge of NERC and ERCOT protocols and operating guides.
? Basic skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).
? Advanced skill in use of communication applications (telnet, hyperterminal, etc.).
? Advanced skill in reading and interpreting electrical control diagrams and prints.
? Skill in the use of electrical testing equipment and calibration.
? Skill in the use of handheld manual and power tools.
? Skill in verbal and written communication.
? Skill in communicating effectively with team members, supervision / management and external
organizations under normal and emergency conditions.
? Ability to work in a team environment.
Work Environment:
? Works in an industrial, electrical substation or plant environment
? Work involves exposure to various and sometimes extreme weather conditions
? Work involves traveling and lodging out of town
? Work involves call-out
? Works in close proximity to energized high-voltage electrical equipment
Physical Demands:
? Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in using hand tools and operating equipment
? Work involves occasional climbing, crawling, crouching or other non-sitting positions in testing of
substation equipment (e.g. RTU’s, Relay Panels, Circuit Breakers, Transformers, transducers, and
interface panels)
? Work involves frequent standing and/or walking in testing of substation equipment (e.g. RTU’s, Relay
Panels, Circuit Breakers, Transformers, transducers, and interface panels)
? Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time
? Pushes or pulls up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time
Preferred Qualifications – Commissioning and maintaining protective devices in electric transmission substations operating above 69kV.
- Electro-mechanical and microprocessor based protective relays.
- Use of Doble F6150 test sets and Enoserv RTS testing software.
