Production Insurance Underwriter- Small commercial
Job description
We are seeking a Production Underwriter to drive profitable new business growth for our Small Commercial BOP portfolio. This is a high-visibility role focused on building strong agency relationships, identifying new market opportunities, and contributing to underwriting strategy. You will underwrite new and renewal business within your assigned territory while proactively engaging with appointed agents to promote our products and appetite. You’ll serve as the face of our underwriting team advising, negotiating, and problem-solving in partnership with our distribution team.
Essential Functions
- Underwrite and select profitable new and renewal Commercial Lines BOP accounts in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite.
- Actively drive new business production by prospecting within assigned agency territory, promoting underwriting appetite, and identifying growth opportunities.
- Conduct regular agency meetings-virtually and in person-to strengthen relationships, deliver training, and provide guidance on submission quality and product offerings.
- Collaborate with Distribution and Product Management to execute territory plans and achieve production targets.
- Analyze submissions and recommend appropriate coverages, limits, pricing, and terms based on sound risk assessment and competitive positioning.
- Apply sound underwriting judgment and risk-based philosophy to ensure long-term portfolio profitability.
- Leverage underwriting tools, analytics, and market knowledge to support decision-making and agency negotiation.
- Provide real-time feedback to agents to improve submission quality and underwriting efficiency.
- Monitor and manage agency performance, recommending action plans where needed to ensure alignment with underwriting goals.
- Identify gaps in product offerings or processes and collaborate with product managers to recommend enhancements or adjustments.
- Appropriately rate and process new business, renewals, endorsements, and inspections for small commercial products.
- Review and act on inspection reports, applying necessary underwriting adjustments or risk improvement actions.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of underwriting guidelines, competitor activity, industry trends, and regulatory developments.
- Support a high-performance team culture through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mentorship where applicable.
- Position is based out of our St. Petersburg, Florida office and follows a hybrid work schedule, which includes required in-office presence to support collaboration, training, and team engagement. Remote work flexibility is available based on business needs and performance.
Travel
- Up to 30% travel required for agency visits, marketing events, and underwriting meetings within the assigned territory.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and at least 3 years’ experience in commercial BOP underwriting.
Preferred Education and Experience
- 5 to 7 years of Property & Casualty insurance experience, with at least 3 years specifically in commercial underwriting for Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) or small commercial package business.
- Proven success in a production underwriting role, including responsibility for driving new business growth, managing agency relationships, and achieving territory premium goals.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with independent agents, including conducting field visits and facilitating business development discussions.
- Strong technical underwriting acumen with the ability to assess risk, apply pricing strategies, and negotiate terms aligned with profitability targets.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; comfortable leading agency meetings and product training sessions.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered, especially when combined with professional designations such as CIC, CPCU, or AU.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to utilize underwriting platforms and reporting tools effectively.
- Highly organized with excellent time management, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
